West Ham were once again linked yesterday with a move for Sunderland’s creative wonderkid Chris Rigg, with some reports claiming the Hammers are actively chasing the youngster.
However, as Claret & Hugh first reported on 12th March, the reality is quite different. Rather than West Ham pursuing Rigg, the player has actually been offered to the club.
For much of the season, West Ham have been linked with Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham—the younger brother of England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham. But it’s 17-year-old Rigg who has now become of far more interest to the Irons, and he will be available at the end of the current campaign.
Claret & Hugh spoke with a trusted transfer insider who confirmed the situation:
“Loads of clubs want this kid—Man U and Chelsea are both interested, but West Ham are well in the mix and a deal can be done,” we were told.
“His family don’t want him going to a big club just to sit in the reserves. He’s made 30 appearances this season and wants to continue his development. West Ham have been offered the player—it’s just up to them now.”
Rigg, along with Bellingham, has been outstanding for Sunderland this season, with the Black Cats currently sitting comfortably in the Championship play-off positions. If they manage to secure Premier League promotion, the club will no doubt fight to keep both players at the Stadium of Light.
However, the talented duo are clearly on the rise—and if West Ham want to beat the competition to Rigg’s signature, they’ll need to act fast.
