West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta could yet join Manchester City—if he avoids a lengthy ban following his FA hearing.
Claret & Hugh has been briefed on the situation surrounding the Brazilian playmaker, who is currently defending himself against betting-related misconduct charges.
While the hearing remains ongoing, there is said to be quiet confidence within Paqueta’s camp that he is unlikely to face the lifetime ban the FA are reportedly keen to impose.
Sources suggest a lack of direct evidence against West Ham’s record signing, and even if found guilty, a successful appeal in the high court is considered likely.
As a result, Paqueta and his legal team remain optimistic, believing it’s now a matter of when, not if, he is cleared.
The midfielder saw a proposed £80 million move to Manchester City collapse in the summer of 2023 when the FA announced its investigation into suspicious betting patterns involving yellow cards received by Paqueta during West Ham games.
Understandably, many assumed that would be the end of City’s interest. However, a well-placed source told Claret & Hugh: “Not necessarily. City would still be his most likely destination if cleared—but not for anywhere near the previous fee.”
All things considered, if Paqueta manages to avoid a long ban and West Ham can secure a respectable fee, most at the club would breathe a sigh of relief.
What does seem clear, however, is that the Brazilian’s time at the London Stadium is drawing to a close—regardless of whether a move to Manchester City materialises. With an offer from Flamengo likely to resurface in the summer, it would be understandable if The Paq-Man wanted to end his European adventure.
