Tottenham star Cristian Romero has emerged as a transfer target for Atletico Madrid
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Cristian Romero at Tottenham Hotspur.
The centre-half’s contract at White Hart Lane does not run out until the summer of 2027, but an exit cannot be ruled out. He has missed significant chunks of the ongoing campaign due to a combination of hamstring and quad problems. Overall, the Argentine international has missed 27 games for Spurs, limiting him to only 12 Premier League appearances.
Despite his injury concerns, Cristian Romero remains a crucial player for Ange Postecoglou and undoubtedly the best defender at the club. When fit, he is among the first names on the head coach’s teamsheet and thus, the Hotspur Way chiefs are determined to keep hold of the 26-year-old. They want to renew his contract, something the South American is in no rush to do at the moment.
With Romero yet to commit his future at N17, reports surfaced recently suggesting that the Lilywhites could be open to cashing in on him this summer. The club bosses are set to issue an ultimatum; either the 2022 World Cup winner pens fresh terms before the transfer window reopens, or he will be sold.
Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Relevo, Atletico Madrid have made Romero their primary defensive target for the summer transfer window. They are searching for a new centre-half and have made an initial contact with the Tottenham star’s camp. The Argentinean is open to leaving Spurs at the end of the season.
The Cordoba-born defensive ace will push for an exit from Tottenham if Atletico Madrid makes a significant offer. And Romero’s desire to leave the North London outfit will be entirely understandable given the kind of season Ange Postecoglou and Co. have endured and how far behind they find themselves from the top six.

Winning the Europa League is the only realistic route to clinching Champions League qualification, but given Spurs’ struggles with consistency and injury problems, it would not be easy to beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals and go all the way in the competition. The aforementioned report adds that negotiations are expected to be complicated, especially with Daniel Levy, renowned for his firm stance in transfer business dealings.

At 26, Romero is perhaps entering the peak of his powers and wants to play regularly in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid should be able to offer that—almost certainly next season at least. Thus, if Los Colchoneros table a sizeable bid in the summer, Spurs should sell Romero and reinvest the funds in reported target Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi.
