Tottenham have begun talks over a new deal with Rodrigo Bentancur amid Atletico Madrid interest
Tottenham Hotspur could make significant changes to their squad after a hugely disappointing 2024/25 season as they look to bounce back stronger next year.
Along with refreshing the squad this summer, the club bosses will also focus on renewing contracts of certain key players they view as part of their long-term strategy and vision. One player whose future needs resolving is Rodrigo Bentancur.
Rodrigo Bentancur is on the course of entering the final year of his contract at N17. The Uruguayan midfielder has not managed to live up to the lofty expectations of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful due to a combination of injury problems and inconsistency. When fit, he has more often than not featured in Ange Postecoglou’s first XI.
So, the 27-year-old is a key player for Postecoglou, and Tottenham would certainly not want to lose him on a free transfer next year. As a result, the club have opened dialogue with Bentancur and his entourage over a new contract.
However, as the central midfielder is about to enter the last 12 months of his existing deal, Atletico Madrid are reportedly planning to take an advantage and sign him on a bargain fee.
While negotiations are yet to commence, Atletico Madrid are set to test Tottenham’s resolve before the summer window officially reopens in June. And ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks the Lilywhites would demand at least £35million to sell Bentancur.
“I think Bentancur is one of the really good players that Tottenham have got,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.
“Especially when it comes to the midfielders at the club. I think it shows what kind of quality he has when a team like Atletico Madrid wants to sign him. Diego Simeone doesn’t make many mistakes with the players that he brings in.
“A move to Spain would probably suit Bentancur, I’d imagine he would be able to settle quickly. He has proven that he is a good player. I like him as a footballer.
“He will go for at least £35m if Spurs decide to sell him. He is that kind of player, a quality player.”

Spurs are already in talks with Bentancur over a new deal, which shows the club’s intent to keep him. At 27, we expect the Uruguayan international to enjoy the best years of his career and bring more consistency to his game. A glut of freak injuries and accidents have not allowed the midfielder to take his game to the next level at Tottenham.
Yet, Atletico Madrid are interested in him which shows Bentancur’s quality and experience. Diego Simeone loves to work with combative and hardworking players, and the ex-Juventus star certainly falls into that category. He has played well under Big Ange at Spurs, operating mostly as a deep-lying playmaker in the Australian’s high-intensity system.

So, the club chiefs must push Bentancur and his camp to sign a new deal as quickly as possible. The more time goes by, the speculation surrounding the South American’s future would only ramp up.
