Tottenham Hotspur could sell Alejo Veliz after he returns from Espanyol loan at the end of the season
Alejo Veliz does not appear to have a future at Tottenham Hotspur after failing to impress on loan at La Liga side Espanyol.
The Lilywhites spent £13m to sign Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central in the summer of 2023. He was deemed an investment for the future rather than a player who’d make an immediate impact on Ange Postecoglou’s squad. The young striker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, returned to Spain to join Espanyol on a season-long loan.
However, the Argentinean has not progressed like Tottenham wanted. He has only netted four goals in 23 appearances across all competitions—including just one strike from 21 league outings. This demonstrates Veliz’s struggles in the Spanish top flight, and as a result, he is set to return to White Hart Lane when his loan deal with Espanyol expires at the end of the season.
According to Argentinean journalist Uriel Lugt on X, Espanyol have no plans to make Veliz’s loan deal from Spurs permanent. That means the Tottenham bosses have a decision to make regarding the Argentinean Under-20 international for next season, with permanent exit a realistic possibility.
Argentinean giants River Plate have been reportedly showing an interest in signing Veliz, with their manager Marcelo Gallardo ‘determined’ to sign the youngster ahead of this summer’s Club World Cup. This is perhaps the North Londoners’ best opportunity to cash in on the 21-year-old.
Spurs are set to make wholesale changes to their squad this summer after a tough campaign, and Veliz is one of the names placed on the chopping block. The South American is among several names that the club are looking to offload to fund a move for a top star such as Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

The Hotspur Way chiefs also are contemplating whether to offload high-earners, experienced campaigners such as Son Heung-min and Cristian Romero at the end of the season. Richarlison remains heavily linked with an exit too, while Timo Werner is set to return to RB Leipzig after the expiry of his loan with Spurs.
Regardless, Veliz is not guaranteed a place in Ange Postecoglou’s plans at the club. It is worth noting that the Godeken-born talent has not been given chances by Ange to show his talent at Spurs, yet the club bosses are tilting towards offloading him permanently.

A permanent departure is also perhaps best suited for Veliz as an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will not benefit him in any manner going forward. While a move to Spurs has not worked out, the Argentinean talent is still only 21 and can revive his career elsewhere—potentially with River Plate if they come calling for his signature.
