Man United boss Erik ten Hag has claimed Harry Maguire has a ‘decision to make’ on his future.
Manchester United Football Club have absolutely moved in a different direction under Erik ten Hag, with strides being made within that dressing room.
However, further changes have to be made this summer, in order to continue to close the gap on Manchester City atop the table. Inevitably, that means more players will have to be moved on.
One man whose future is far from certain is Harry Maguire. I don’t doubt he’ll have plenty of offers after falling out of favour during the 2022/23 campaign.
Ten Hag finally spoke out on the Maguire situation during an excellent interview with The Times. He has claimed that the United player has a ‘decision he has to make’ in regard to his Reds’ future.
When asked about Maguire’s future, the gaffer had this to say:
“Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job. But it’s also a decision he has to make.” Ten Hag told The Times.
You get the feeling that the manager wouldn’t be too disappointed if Maguire does indeed stay at United – though he will not stop the Englishman from leaving, either.
Maguire is someone who commanded a huge transfer fee when he signed. An amount of money that he was never going to live up to. That’s, understandably, made it an uphill battle from day one.
The ability is so obviously there, however, Maguire isn’t the right stylistic fit for this system. There’s no getting away from that. The situation is complicated by the fact that he’s club captain right now. Perhaps it’s easier to sell him, rather than strip him of the captaincy.
In terms of where he stands in the pecking order, Maguire is probably the fifth choice. Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and even Luke Shaw are all ahead in that regard. It’s a pretty brutal fall from grace.
