Man United are interested in activating the £65m release clause in the contract of Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa.
Manchester United Football Club may well be in the hunt for a new goalkeeper this summer. David de Gea has been a stunning servant for the Red Devils over the years, though there’s doubts about the stylistic fit.
That said, it still looks like De Gea will remain at the club, with the Spaniard in contract talks with United, albeit at a much lower wage. He’s also not been guaranteed the starting job by Erik ten Hag going into 2023/24.
Does that lead to Dean Henderson coming back and getting another chance at success here in Manchester? Or will United dip their toes into the goalkeeper market?
Well, A Bola (via Sport Witness) seem to think it’s the latter. They link United with a move to sign Diogo Costa. The FC Porto man had an impressive campaign again this season, as his stock continues to rise at both domestic and international level.
They claim that Costa has already said his goodbyes to the Porto crowd during a recent game, suggesting that he’s played his last game for the Portugal side.
To add to that, United remain interested in activating the £65m (€75m) release clause in the 24-year-old’s contract. This deal was signed in 2021, with Costa under contract until 2026.
United have been linked with Costa previously, though I struggle to see how United will spend such a large chunk of their budget on the Portugal international, while also keeping De Gea at the club. I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet to claim that neither will enjoy the guarantees (or lack of) about their playing time.
In terms of fit, Costa would be excellent. He’d need some time to adjust, though perhaps that’s why United want to keep De Gea around for at least a season.
