Man United have eyes on Empoli shot-stopper, Guglielmo Vicario, to fill their void at goalkeeper.
David de Gea has been an incredible servant for Manchester United Football Club. While it’s true his stay at Old Trafford is set to be extended, his future as the undisputed starter will come into question.
Erik ten Hag has made no secret of that fact, claiming he will never guarantee a starting berth for the Spaniard. This hints towards United moving for a goalkeeper who can challenge, maybe even surpass De Gea as the regular first-teamer.
Dean Henderson could return from Nottingham Forest and be that guy, though it’s unclear whether Ten Hag views the Englishman as good enough.
Several goalkeepers have already been linked with a potential Old Trafford move. Over the last 24 hours, Gazzetta dello Sport (Thursday print edition), with the translation via Sport Witness, believe United have interest in Guglielmo Vicario.
Apparently, United have added the 26-year-old goalkeeper to their list of possible targets this summer, along with the likes of David Raya and Diogo Costa.
Vicario only moved to Empoli on a permanent deal just last summer, after undergoing a successful loan move during the season prior.
Now, GdS believe Vicario is one of the keepers being eyed by Inter Milan, in case they have to part with Andre Onana. However, Inter have been told to ‘pay attention abroad at the looks of United’, who are also weighing up a move for the Italian.
Vicario strikes me as someone who’d be happy to sit in behind De Gea for a year or two adjusting to the English game before challenging for the starting job. It’s not as bold as signing someone like Raya or Costa, who’d challenge from minute one.
Either way, United absolutely must have someone who can push De Gea hard for starts.
