The last few summer transfer windows have seen Bayern Munich trying to add more quality in the right-back position. Benjamin Pavard has done a fine job in this role since arriving at the club in 2019, but he prefers playing in the heart of the defense.
Bouna Sarr couldn’t make an impact at Bayern since arriving from Marseille in 2020. He is expected to leave in the summer. The record Bundesliga champions sealed the signing of Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax on a free transfer last summer. The Moroccan has endured a difficult debut season, but he has all the tools to be a successful right-back for Die Roten.
With Benjamin Pavard expected to leave this summer, the German club may look to sign a new right-back that will compete with Mazraoui for a place in the starting XI. One recent report in Germany suggests that Die Roten is interested in one of the promising right-backs in the Bundesliga.
According to Sky Sports in Germany (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern is interested in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutch right-back is likely to leave Leverkusen this summer since he has two years left on his contract. Apart from Die Roten, Manchester United, and Barcelona are also interested in Frimpong.
Frimpong has been one of the best right-backs in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman provides a cutting edge in the final third, making him a very suitable full-back for a team that dominates possession. He racked up seven assists in the Bundesliga this season, contributing with 1.3 key passes per game. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
Along with providing creativity in the final third, Frimpong has also been a prolific goalscorer for Leverkusen. He scored eight goals in the Bundesliga this season. The Dutchman does have a good scope for improvement defensively, which will improve by playing in the right environment/system and experience.
Despite the quality of Frimpong, his move to Bayern is unlikely to take place this summer. He will cost a significant fee. Die Roten has several other areas to address on the pitch, so they cannot allocate significant funds for a right-back. The Bavarian club may stick with Noussair Mazraoui and Josip Stanisic as right-back options for next season.

The money raised from the departure of Benjamin Pavard may fund other signings for Die Roten. The record Bundesliga champions will have to look for a new center-back if Lucas Hernandez also leaves the club. For now, Die Roten’s interest in Frimpong may not be concrete.
