Man United may not sign a new defender this summer, if Harry Maguire refuses to leave.
Manchester United have been linked with many centre-halves this summer, with Erik ten Hag seemingly keen on bringing in additional quality in that area of the field.
Kim Min-jae is the name most-linked with a potential Old Trafford switch, with the man from South Korea having a release clause in his contract that becomes active in July.
With four centre-backs already on the books, plus Luke Shaw, Ten Hag may have to sell before he can buy in that area. It’s Harry Maguire who has been deemed surplus to requirements.
The most expensive defender of all time has struggled for any sort of minutes this season. Now, 90min.com believe Maguire could still cause United further harm if he refuses to leave.
United are ‘concerned’ their plans to sign a new ‘elite’ defender could be scuppered by Maguire, if he intends on staying put rather than moving elsewhere.
There’s a whole host of clubs interested in Maguire, including Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Milan. However, Maguire is keen on staying at Old Trafford, instead wanting to battle for a starting spot here.
It’s reiterated that Kim is a target, though that transfer strategy may change if Maguire is insistent on staying put.
Maguire is under contract until 2025, with the option for a further year. The ball is firmly in United’s court, though if the Englishman isn’t planning on going anywhere, it could prove to be problematic.
For me, it’s about ambition (or lack of). Maguire seems happy to collect his massive pay cheque every week, without the pressure of playing. He can also wave goodbye to his England career beyond the summer, as I’d imagine playing time will only further decrease. I’d also relieve him of his captaincy duties, too.
