Manchester City secured the Treble as they beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola‘s side also won the Premier League and the FA Cup during a remarkable campaign.
Mail Sport’s Jack Gaughan assesses the impact made by each City player this season.
Rodri played the most games for City this season and got the winner against Inter Milan
RODRI (55 apps) – 9.5
There was a point during his first season in 2019-20 when there were serious question marks over the central midfielder. But it is hard to imagine a Pep Guardiola City without Rodri these days. A metronome and someone who has done it week in, week out without a break for months. And then wins them the Treble.
BERNARDO SILVA (54 apps) – 8.5
Silva’s crowning contribution to this Treble was undoubtedly his two goals in the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid. He’s reverted back to his old right wing station in recent months as City settled on a team that can give them control and relentless pressing.
ERLING HAALAND (52 apps) – 10
The best debut season a foreign import has produced in Premier League history. A phenomenon who has proven invaluable in a way that meant Guardiola could alter how City play, which contributed to them finally getting over the line in Europe.
Erling Haaland enjoyed the best season from a foreign import in Premier League history
ILKAY GUNDOGAN (50 apps) – 9
Seems to be improving with age. Class personified. A pure Guardiola midfielder who always chips in with important goals during the run-in. This year was no different, while Gundogan has led the team in exemplary fashion after being voted in as captain following Fernandinho’s departure.
Ilkay Gundogan has led the team in exemplary fashion and seems to be getting better with age
JULIAN ALVAREZ (49 apps) – 7.5
Seventeen goals in a debut season – from just 23 starts – would have been a major return had it not been for Haaland. Alvarez is often used off the bench but played a crucial role in the cup competitions. A World Cup winners’ medal for him as well this year.
JACK GREALISH (49 apps) – 8
Infectious personality with a major role in the dressing room, Grealish’s improvement this season has been one of the stories of City’s Treble. Could still add more goals but his function in the team – retaining the ball, driving forward – is invaluable for the team.
Jack Grealish’s improvement this season is one of the stories of City’s treble success
KEVIN DE BRUYNE (48 apps) – 8.5
Instant connection with Haaland was unsurprising and kicked on towards the end of the campaign after Guardiola had told him to ‘go back to basics’. City’s manager felt De Bruyne had been forcing things too much and he has since flourished.
Pep Guardiola told Kevin De Bruyne to go ‘back to basics’ and it had the desired effect
RIYAD MAHREZ (47 apps) – 7.5
Will have wanted to feature more in the biggest games but has been reduced to minutes off the bench instead. Big performance when City came from two down against Tottenham and netted a hat-trick in the FA Cup semi-final with Sheffield United.
EDERSON (47 apps) – 7.5
The Brazilian faced criticism over his shot stopping around the turn of the year. Since, Ederson has completed some important saves in the Champions League run and looked like a calming influence as they hunted down Arsenal in the league.
Goalkeeper Ederson bounced back from criticism to finish the season in impressive form
PHIL FODEN (47 apps) – 7.5
A bout of appendicitis around the March international break saw Foden drop down the pecking order. The England international has seemed sharp and conjured moments of magic in the opportunities as a substitute. Emotional hat-trick against Manchester United in October.
MANUEL AKANJI (47 apps) – 8
Bought as a fifth-choice central defender, an emergency signing costing £15million from Borussia Dortmund in August, Akanji has played more games than any other defender. The Swiss has never let Guardiola down in a variety of positions across the back line.
Defender Manuel Akanji has never let City down when operating in various positions
RUBEN DIAS (42 apps) – 8.5
No coincidence that City’s resurgence coincided with Dias becoming more prominent. His dovetailing with John Stones has given a City an additional solidity. Dias is also one of the more vocal squad members and led a pre-match huddle before the FA Cup final.
NATHAN AKE (40 apps) – 9
Some of City’s stars think Ake is their Player of the Season. Unfortunate to pick up an injury in recent weeks that saw him lose the left back spot to Akanji. Beginning to roam forward with more confidence and a solid defender who barely ever looks flustered.
KYLE WALKER (38 apps) – 8
Another one who has peaked as this season came to a crescendo. Guardiola suggested he wouldn’t play too much in their new system but Walker effortlessly alternated between right back and centre half in City’s new take on their fluid formation.
JOHN STONES (33 apps) – 9
The gamechanger when operating between centre half and a No 6. Stones has the tactical nous to be able to carry out Guardiola’s instructions to the letter and his emergence in that new role has opened the game up for City. A massive fans’ favourite now.
John Stones is the gamechanger for City when operating between centre half and a No 6
JOAO CANCELO (26 apps) – 4
Cancelo was left unhappy with a lack of minutes after the World Cup and made sure Guardiola knew about it. City obliged to let him go, offering Barcelona the chance before Bayern Munich came in. Cancelo had been playing poorly and not hitting his usual heights.
COLE PALMER (25 apps) – 6
Didn’t really kick on as was hoped, although displays in recent weeks have been very encouraging. Played out of position a lot. Needs regularly games and could look to leave on loan in the summer. There is definitely some top potential still left to unlock.
AYMERIC LAPORTE (24 apps) – 6
Heading for the exit door this summer after effectively becoming sixth-choice at centre half given Walker’s new role in a back three. Laporte has been superb for City during his time there, although chances were limited after a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest in February.
RICO LEWIS (23 apps) – 8
A star in the making. Guardiola credits Lewis with helping City climb out of a hole after New Year as an inverted right back. Knowledge of the game clearly heavily outweighs his tender age and a huge favourite among the coaching staff. Strong first year as a professional.
Rico Lewis is a star in the making – his knowledge of the game outweighs his tender age
SERGIO GOMEZ (23 apps) – 5
Signed from Anderlecht last summer, Gomez could have gone out on loan but was kept around after City pulled out of the race for Marc Cucurella. Chances have come in the domestic cup competitions, with a few appearances in Europe.
KALVIN PHILLIPS (21 apps) – 5
Phillips is yet to get going in a City shirt and only recently made his full Premier League debut. He wants to stay and prove himself at the Etihad Stadium. Guardiola needs an understudy to Rodri who commands trust and Phillips feels he can earn that.
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips has yet to really get going at City but wants to prove himself
STEFAN ORTEGA (14 apps) – 7
Only really one moment where he drew criticism: after the abject defeat by Southampton in the Carabao Cup. The esteem in which he is held was evident at the FA Cup final when Guardiola didn’t think twice about giving him the gloves over Ederson.
