Man United could challenge for the signature of Andre Onana, with Chelsea also keen.
As expected, links to goalkeepers have grown in frequency since the season ended. David de Gea’s inability to play out from the back leaves question marks over his future.
Several names have already been linked with potentially usurping De Gea as the first-choice starter. No doubt the stories will continue as the summer window progresses.
The latest claim comes from the Evening Standard. They believe United are showing an interest in Inter Milan number one, Andre Onana.
It’s Chelsea who currently lead the race to sign Onana, though the Evening Standard believe United ‘could rival’ the club to sign the 27-year-old goalkeeper.
The player is ‘keen’ on resolving his future, while United could offer Champions League football – which is something that Chelsea does not have.
Onana only moved to Inter last summer, though the financial problems the Serie A club are in could lead them to selling the man from Cameroon. In terms of asking price, around £50m should do the trick.
While Chelsea are the current frontrunners, things can change very quickly on the transfer front.
United need a ball-playing keeper. Who better than a man that has worked with Ten Hag previously? Onana excelled under the Dutchman at Ajax, while the player will know exactly what will be asked of him.
The transfer fee seems to be the going rate for any high-level keeper, particularly with Onana having plenty of time left on his Inter deal.
For anyone who watched the Champions League final, you’ll see how good Onana was when it comes to playing out from the back. Quite frankly, it was eye-opening. United absolutely need someone like that in between the sticks. Sooner rather than later.
