Man United still have eyes on Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez.
The hunt for a new goalkeeper, to either challenge or replace David de Gea, is leading Manchester United to search far and wide.
David Raya and Diogo Costa seem to be the names atop most fans’ lists, though neither come cheaply. Further shot-stoppers are now being linked with a potential Red Devils switch – including Emi Martinez.
The Aston Villa man had another pretty good season for the Premier League club. He’s also a World Cup winner these days.
Hailing from Argentina, Martinez could look to further his career by moving to a new club over the next few months. Manchester United have been linked with him previously. They’re still keen apparently…
It’s journalist Gaston Edul with the scoop. The information was relayed by reputable Argentina fan account @AlbicelesteTalk. We’ve trawled the web to find the source of these quotes and they’re not on any of his socials, so we presume Edul has said them live on Argentine TV.
Anyway, the claim states that United are still ‘in’ for the 30-year-old shot-stopper, though no formal offer has been made to Aston Villa at this point. Chelsea are also keen.
Erik ten Hag is seemingly intent on bringing in a keeper who is better with the ball at feet. I can totally understand why, with that being De Gea’s biggest weakness.
Martinez represents a definite upgrade in that area of the field, while he’s also an accomplished shot-stopper and excellent penalty saver. If the price is right, this feels like a signing that’s definitely worth exploring.
My only concern with Martinez is his on (and off) field antics. He’s a proper wind up merchant. It can sometimes work in your favour, though it can often work against you, too. Is that something United and Ten Hag will tolerate?
