Alvaro Fernandez has a genuine chance at being drafted into the Man United senior setup.
Manchester United made excellent use of the loan system during the 2022/23 season, credit where it’s due.
Amad, Hannibal and Alvaro Fernandez were the standouts for us. All of whom looked pretty good for their respective Championship clubs. Decisions will now be made on their future.
The Athletic (subscription required) provided updates on the futures of several young players. Without going into too much detail as it’s behind a paywall, we want to focus on Fernandez.
The young Spaniard looked excellent for Preston North End last term. He’s now ready to take that next step at this stage in his career.
The Athletic believe the 20-year-old has been given a ‘good chance’ at being brought into the senior United squad at this moment in time.
Ten Hag is wanting to add to his full-back options, with Fernandez a more than competent left-back.
If it’s decided he needs another year away, the Spaniard will likely be loaned to a Premier League club for the 2023/24 season, though a decision is yet to be made.
It will all come down to what happens during pre-season tour. Fernandez is a top tier talent. I fully expect him to shine, particularly with better players around him.
This is a major opportunity for an exciting talent, who is no doubt chomping at the bit and ready to take this chance.
In the end, it all comes down to what the club want for Fernandez. If they prefer him to stick around and be drip-fed minutes next season, he will be given limited first-team chances in competitive fixtures.
Failing that, a loan to a lower end Premier League side could guarantee top-flight minutes on a regular basis.
Both options have their benefits and limitations, though it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
From a purely selfish point of view, I’m just excited to watch this kid play.
