Man United are contemplating making their move to sign Andre Onana.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation is interesting, to say the least. The Old Trafford side have offered David de Gea a new deal, which has been agreed to in principle, though not yet signed.
The Spaniard becomes a free agent at the end of the month, making this a real priority for the Red Devils.
Among fans, De Gea is now public enemy number one due to his lack of ability with the ball at feet. However, the club seem intent on keeping him around.
As you’d expect, goalkeepers are being heavily linked with a Red Devils move – including Andre Onana. Earlier today, it was claimed that United were yet to bid for the Cameroon international.
Now, The Athletic have provided more information on United and Onana. They claim that the Reds ‘are considering’ a move to sign the 27-year-old, though again, no offer has been made at this stage.
Onana only joined Inter last summer, leaving Ajax as a free agent at the same time as Ten Hag made the move to Old Trafford.
As a result, Onana could cost United up to £70m, which is obviously a huge fee for a goalkeeper. However, Inter are under no pressure to sell due to Onana’s contract situation.
This would represent a large portion of United’s summer transfer budget, though I still cannot help but feel it’s a deal worth making.
United concede possession far too cheaply in the modern-day game. Addressing that, with a shot-stopper who can play out from the back, could be vital. Onana is also miles better than De Gea when it comes to commanding your area and claiming crosses.
Obviously, Onana isn’t the only option for United, but I’d be disappointed if the club didn’t sign a keeper who can at least rival De Gea for starts in the event that the Spaniard stays.
