Man United haven’t yet made an official approach to sign Andre Onana.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation is certainly interesting. The Red Devils have won many points on the back of David de Gea masterclasses over recent years, though it’s fair to say the position has drastically changed.
Suddenly, De Gea’s weaknesses are being highlighted on a game-by-game basis. His insane shot-stopping abilities have dwindled, too.
That leaves Erik ten Hag with a key decision to make. Moving in a different direction is a bold call, while it’s also not easy given De Gea’s high wages.
One man the club have looked at is Andre Onana. The Cameroon international enjoyed a superb season for Inter Milan.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on any potential United move for Onana.
As things stand, United are yet to make any official approach or bid to sign the 27-year-old, despite the fact that Ten Hag knows the player ‘very well’.
It’s believed the budget for De Gea will be solely based on De Gea’s future. Presumably, if the Spaniard leaves, more money will be afforded to a signing in that position. If he stays, less funds will be available.
Onana was super confident with the ball at feet during the Champions League final. That’s exactly what United need. For too long, they’ve gave up possession due to De Gea aimlessly booting it long. They’d be far more competitive in the derby games with a player like Onana in between the sticks.
Signing the man from Cameroon will not be easy. Chelsea are also keen, while he’s only been with the Serie A club for a year so they can command a pretty decent transfer fee to let their number one leave.
That said, I believe Onana is someone who can come right in and force De Gea out of the team from day one, assuming the Spaniard stays beyond the summer.
