Man United are set to make their move to sign Jordan Pickford.
It’s now common knowledge that Manchester United are looking to sign a goalkeeper of some sort. Be it a David de Gea replacement, or an understudy to the Spaniard.
That is yet to be decided. It all depends on whether the current number one leaves. Then, a budget on a new shot-stopper will be decided.
I must confess, when Jordan Pickford was linked with an Old Trafford switch a week or so ago, eyebrows were raised. Even as a rotational option, it feels underwhelming.
Now, the Daily Star on Sunday have backed up the Reds’ interest in the Englishman. They state that United ‘are preparing’ a £45m bid for the 29-year-old this summer.
Apparently, the England keeper is ‘top’ of Ten Hag’s list of potential replacements for the Spaniard, as his contract stalemate with United continues.
De Gea has just two weeks left on his current deal, so far refusing to extend his stay on massively reduced wages.
It’s stated Ten Hag has ‘identified’ Pickford as the ideal replacement, due to his brilliant distribution and excellent shot-stopping abilities.
Everton are in a financial predicament, having to raise some funds through player sales. No doubt £45m for Pickford would ease that burden.
United are hoping to ‘exploit’ that situation with a £45m opening bid next week, as they’re convinced Everton will have to cash in.
Honestly, I’d be disappointed if this was the plan. Pickford, for my money, is way too hot-headed to become a United number one. Particularly at such a high price-point.
No offence to him, but surely there are better options out there?
