Man United are looking set to make their move to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton.
There seems to be the feeling that Erik ten Hag is desperate for a new midfielder first and foremost. The Manchester United boss has had eyes on Mason Mount for a few weeks now, though no deal has been reached.
I stress that the Mount saga is still ongoing, with a United bid still on the table for the Englishman. However, the Reds are starting to look elsewhere.
Moises Caicedo is among the names the club could look at. Now, Sky Sports News have provided an update on that front.
According to their sources, United are now expected to ‘formally approach’ Brighton over the signing of the 21-year-old, after initial contacts were made this week.
Again, it’s reiterated that Mount’s signature remains the focus, while the club are also looking to sign a striker.
United will continue to weigh up other midfield options aside from Mount, with Caicedo on that list. No official bid or approach has been made at this stage.
Caicedo enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 season. He put in three excellent displays against United, so we’ve seen his capabilities first hand.
However, the man from Ecuador will not come cheaply. Arsenal saw a £70m January offer for Caicedo rejected. You’d imagine the asking price has only increased since that point.
There are pros and cons in regard to Caicedo and Mount. The former is younger, but significantly more expensive. The latter is coming off a bad season, but feels like the better stylistic fit.
For what it’s worth, I think either would drastically improve this United squad in different ways. Though you still get the impression that Mount is the number one target.
