Man United are looking set to firm up their interest in Andre Onana with an official bid shortly.
David de Gea is now just a couple of days away from becoming a free agent. The Spaniard, an incredible servant to Manchester United, has struggled over the last few years.
His kicking game hasn’t looked good, nor has De Gea developed any sort of command of his penalty box. Arguably these are the two most important traits for any goalkeeper in 2023.
That’s probably why Erik ten Hag is looking to move in a different direction. Andre Onana is the name making the headlines in regard to a Reds switch right now.
Journalist Alfredo Pedulla has recently provided an update on the situation of the Inter Milan number one. He says that United are ‘expected’ to make an offer for the 27-year-old in the next ‘few days’.
Seemingly, the Reds are looking to firm up their interest with an official bid. First and foremost, this means that De Gea is looking even more likely to walk away on a free transfer.
In terms of transfer fee, Pedulla states that the €45-50m offer that’s on the table is not enough, with Inter now looking for more. Typically, the ‘United tax’ is in full swing again…
There can be no doubt that Onana would represent a clear upgrade in some areas. He’s also worked with Ten Hag before, which would make that transition a little bit easier for the Cameroonian.
Although not as accomplished a shot-stopper as De Gea, Onana would make up for that by providing his team with way more possession. In theory, United should concede far fewer chances with a player like Onana in between the sticks.
I still maintain the belief that this sort of move has to be the number one priority for United this summer. Whatever the cost, a top tier keeper simply has to be signed.
