Man United are showing an interest in young midfielder, Joao Neves.
We’ve said it time and time again. Manchester United have made no secret of the fact that they’re trying to sign a new midfielder of some description this summer.
Mason Mount is the number one name on Erik ten Hag’s list, though as that deal continues to be held up, the Red Devils are looking at other potential options.
Among those players is Joao Neves. The young midfielder emerged as a top talent for SL Benfica over in Portugal, while also making caps for the international U19s.
Now, according to the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, United are said to be interested in the 18-year-old midfielder.
The Italian journalist doesn’t offer too much information, though he does add that the club ‘likes’ the player, presumably, they’re currently weighing up a potential move.
As a more advanced midfielder, Neves is a completely different type of player to the aforementioned Mount. Perhaps this is a potential signing with the future in mind, rather than the here and now.
Neves is someone who probably isn’t ready for first-team football right away. There’s nothing wrong with that, however, it’s always tough to gauge player development at a young age. You never quite know whether they’re going to fulfil that potential.
With United currently having some older midfielders like Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Fred, I have no qualms with the club trying to get younger in that area.
This doesn’t feel like an either Neves or Mount situation, rather, the club could look to bring in both.
At this stage, it’s not quite clear how interested United are in the young man. I’m sure they like his abilities, but whether they’re ready to back that up with an official bid or transfer move remains to be seen.
