Man United are showing an interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emi Martinez.
David de Gea’s Manchester United contract expires in just a matter of hours. The Spaniard has been an outstanding servant to this club, though sometimes, moving on from players is an absolute necessity.
The 32-year-old probably falls into that bracket at this stage of his career. While it’ll be sad to see him leave, it feels like the right business decision.
Andre Onana is the name most linked with filling that void, though Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez has also been given a mention from time-to-time.
Now, Football Transfers have provided the latest on Martinez’s future, in an exclusive update.
According to their report, United are ‘ready to battle’ Chelsea for the signature of the 30-year-old shot-stopper.
Their sources are telling them that Erik ten Hag wants to ‘team him up’ with his international colleague, Lisandro Martinez.
The Dutch manager feels the ‘connection’ the pair have when on Argentina duty will benefit United’s defence next season.
Mauricio Pochettino is interested in signing Martinez for Chelsea, while Ten Hag views him as the ‘perfect replacement’ for De Gea at the Theatre of Dreams.
The keeper himself would like a move away from the Midlands, preferably to a club with Champions League football on the table. Therefore, if United are genuinely interested in signing the Argentine, they should have no problem beating out competition from Chelsea.
Personally, I think I’d prefer Onana. Martinez’s on-field antics make me wary about signing a player like that. It’s fine doing it while playing for Villa, but do it at Old Trafford, and make a mistake as a result, the pressure could become too much.
