Ethan Laird has departed from Man United on a permanent transfer.
Manchester United Football Club are trending in a different direction under Erik ten Hag, with less emphasis being placed on youth under the Dutchman.
The gaffer has made it clear that you have to be an absolutely special talent to fit into his plans. Alejandro Garnacho is exactly that, while Kobbie Mainoo also has a decent chance. Aside from that, though, it’s going to be tough for the next generation.
Ethan Laird is a player that I’ve admired for a few years now. I always thought he’d be the natural successor in that right-back position. Sadly, that dream is over.
Yesterday, United have confirmed the permanent exit of the talented 21-year-old defender. Laird will now head to Birmingham City.
After a decent loan spell at QPR last season, I naturally assumed Laird would get his chance on pre-season tour, at least to prove his worth to the gaffer.
The word on the street is that Laird is departing for a minimal fee, thought to be around the £750k mark. Honestly, that’s pretty disappointing when all is said and done, further proving United’s deficiencies as a selling club.
I guess Laird’s issue has been injuries. The young man has been out for prolonged periods on more than one occasion. It’s probably tough to come back from that, particularly when it’s happening so often, so early on in your career.
Either way, I fully expect Laird to tear up the Championship next season as that’s just how good he is. Could we see him back at Old Trafford in the future? Who knows.
Best of luck, Ethan!
