Man United wild hold face-to-face talks with David de Gea, amid a contract standoff.
Manchester United Football Club have a true goalkeeping dilemma on their hands. David de Gea’s contract has now expired, though it seems as though the Spaniard is not certain to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Andre Onana has been identified as a potential replacement for the 32-year-old De Gea, though the Reds are not giving up on their current number one just yet.
It’s ESPN with the report, who claim that United are planning ‘face-to-face’ talks with the key star, in a bid to resolve the contract standoff.
De Gea’s existing deal has now expired, so technically he is a free agent as things stand. However, he is getting married this weekend, with United allowing the shot-stopper to spend time with his family in Spain without interruption.
However, club bosses are keen to meet De Gea in person to discuss his contract situation. Seemingly, Erik ten hag remains intent on keeping De Gea at the club beyond this summer, otherwise, they’d just let him walk away for free.
I understand why they want to keep De Gea around, particularly with a limited budget this summer. That said, I cannot help but think United would be better moving on and heading in a different direction.
This side needs a shot-stopper who can play out from the back and give United more control of matches. De Gea sadly cannot offer that and it’s quickly becoming an issue.
That is Onana’s great strength, which is why I find it somewhat odd United are working so hard to bring De Gea back. United should never settle. They should always aim for the absolute best.
