Man United are yet to make an official offer to sign Andre Onana, though a deal is still on the table.
Manchester United Football Club currently do not have a number one goalkeeper. David de Gea’s contract has expired, while Tom Heaton remains at the club in a back-up capacity.
The Red Devils will either have to sign a new shot-stopper or go back to the negotiating table with De Gea, before he moves elsewhere. Right now, bringing someone different in feels like the most preferable option.
Andre Onana has been heavily linked with a Reds switch this summer, with those rumours refusing to go away.
The latest information in the saga comes from Fabrizio Romano. He took to Twitter to confirm that United ‘have still not sent any bid’ to sign Onana, though a move to bring in the player is ‘absolutely on’. Talks remain ongoing.
Romano also adds that De Gea’s situation is to be clarified soon, while the club are also looking at other potential goalkeeping options. As things stand, all roads point to De Gea moving elsewhere.
It goes without saying That Onana would add an awful lot to this squad. His shot-stopping ability is excellent, while his ball-playing skill is next level. Bringing in someone so comfortable with the ball at feet completely transforms the way the whole side will play.
More than anything, I’ve been craving a goalkeeper who has genuine control over his penalty area. De Gea doesn’t really offer that, whereas Onana absolutely does.
Sadly, it all comes at a pretty great cost for United. Onana will not be cheap, with the Reds having to dig pretty deep to sign the man from Cameroon. In the end, it’s going to set the club back around £50m, which is a sizable chunk of their transfer budget.
