Man United have eyes on young goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki.
Manchester United allowed David de Gea to leave after a decade of service at the Theatre of Dreams. The Spaniard will forever go down as one of the best shot-stoppers in club history.
However, times are-a-changing. Andre Onana is being identified as the possible new number one, though he will not come cheaply.
There’s also a potential opening in the back-up goalkeeper position. Dean Henderson is likely to leave this summer, while Tom Heaton alone probably isn’t enough, in case of injury.
That’s why the Red Devils apparently have eyes on young Japanese goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki.
It’s Fabrizio Romano with the information. He says that United have the 20-year-old ‘on their radar’, with United identifying Suzuki as an ‘option’ in the back-up goalkeeper role.
As you’d expect, the priority remains signing Onana, with ‘nothing done’ on a move to sign Suzuki at this stage. The club are ‘informed’ on the young man’s situation.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Suzuki is going to be the next thing since sliced bread. In fact, I hadn’t heard of him until just a few hours ago.
Currently plying his trade for Urawa Reds and the Japan national team, Suzuki is someone who is the right stylistic fit for this system – which is exactly what Ten Hag would want in a back-up keeper.
It’s tough to gauge whether Suzuki is going to fulfil his potential, particularly as the jump-up in league quality would be absolutely huge. There’s no doubt he’d need several months, at the very least, to settle into his new surroundings before he can even be considered as an option for serious minutes in England.
