After the deadline to renew David de Gea’s contract with Manchester United was passed, it appeared inevitable that the goalkeeper would be leaving the club, even though nothing had officially been confirmed.
After United offered De Gea a contract earlier in the season, which the player signed, United reportedly had a change of heart on the offer and didn’t conclude the process.
Only six players have made more appearances in United’s history so it’s a sad ending for a player who has spent the bulk of his career at the club. Had the situation been resolved before the end of the season he would have been given the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to the fans and potentially organise a testimonial for the summer.
Today, De Gea has taken to social media to announce his departure from the club and thank the fans for all their support during his 12 years in Manchester, signing off with a line from one of our chants.
I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club.
I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestows upon a few lucky footballers. It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.
Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me.
We’ve seen it all.
