Harry Maguire is set to hold talks with Erik ten Hag over his Man United future.
There has been talk aplenty about a potential change in captaincy at Manchester United recently. Social media has been awash with fans who are desperate to see the club move away from Harry Maguire.
The Englishman made a steady start to life in Manchester, though things went downhill pretty quickly a few years ago. The ex-Leicester City man has never been able to recover.
The armband talk stems from the fact that Maguire just isn’t playing enough to justify the captaincy right now. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are the favoured pairing. An argument can be made for both Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw being ahead of the Englishman, too.
Now, according to Sky Sports, the United man ‘will have talks’ with Ten Hag about where he fits in, upon his return for pre-season.
Obviously, it’s never nice to be out of the fold, though the fact that he’s club captain makes it even tougher to take.
With two years left on his United deal, there’s a real decision to be made. It may be in Maguire’s best interests to move on now, while he’s still got that opportunity to make one final big career move. If he waits a couple of years, that chance may well be gone.
The club are also looking to generate some extra funds in order to continue to improve the playing squad. Realistically, could United get about £20m for Maguire this summer? That’d be nice, but it all depends on what the player wants.
Who knows, he may want to stick around and fight for his place…
