Man United have paid a classy tribute to Gordon McQueen.
Manchester United play their first pre-season game today, against old rivals, Leeds United. In football, there are sometimes more important things than enemies and scrapping it out.
Gordon McQueen, who recently passed away, played for both Manchester United and Leeds United throughout his brilliant career. It’s why the tribute before kick-off today was so fitting.
Both captains donned ‘McQueen #5’ jerseys ahead of kick-off, with Raphael Varane bestowed with that honour as he was wearing the armband during this game.
It was a really nice gesture by United and Leeds, which will no doubt forever live long in the memory of his family and friends. It just goes to show how loved Gordon was within the footballing community.

It was really nice to see the fans offer a minute’s applause for McQueen ahead of this game, too.
Losing icons is never easy. However, McQueen will always have a place in United history for all the brilliant work he did at this club – both on and off the field.
More than anything, whenever you hear McQueen’s name being mentioned, everyone is quick to tell you what a lovely bloke he was. That’s the most important thing.
No doubt this is a really tough time for the whole family, but they can take some comfort in the fact that McQueen is no longer in pain after battling some health issues before he sadly passed away.
This fitting tribute was a beautiful thing, for a man who gave so much of his life to this club.
Rest in Peace, Gordon.
