Man United have named another young squad for the friendly game vs Lyon in Edinburgh.
Manchester United continue their pre-season tomorrow, with another tricky test for the Red Devils. The lads head North of the border to Scotland, taking on Ligue 1 side Lyon in Edinburgh.
No doubt this is another chance for Erik ten Hag to gauge what young players deserve their place on the plane for the main part of pre-season, which will take place in the United States, starting this weekend.
The gaffer has named a 24-man party for this one, thinning down the herd, while introducing another couple of senior players back into the mix. Both Antony and Donny van de Beek are ready to play following their respective injuries, which is positive news.
What’s interesting here is that some of the younger players have dropped out of contention, while others will get a second opportunity. The likes of Matej Kovar, Isak Hansen-Aaoren and Joe Hugill are among that group.
It’s also intriguing to see Jonny Evans’ name back amongst it. He’s signed a short-term deal at the club for the next week or so, as he looks to build up those fitness levels following injury. We’ll have more on that later.
Check out the confirmed Manchester United squad in full here:
Goalkeepers: Nathan Bishop, Elyh Harrison, Matej Kovar.
Defenders: Jonny Evans, Alvaro Fernandez, Will Fish, Marc Jurado, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Brandon Williams.
Midfielders: Fred, Dan Gore, Hannibal, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Donny van de Beek.
Forwards: Amad, Antony, Noam Emeran, Omari Forson, Joe Hugill, Jadon Sancho.
This is why I love pre-season. These kids will be working up close and personal with the gaffer, looking to impress enough to earn their chance and win their way into the first-team proper.
If Lyon’s side is a strong one, it will be tough to win this match, but more than anything, it’s an excellent test for these youthful players to go up against experienced footballers who have been playing at the highest level for years.
