Charlie Savage could be about to leave Man United in a permanent transfer away.
Manchester United have named their 31-man tour squad for the United States leg of their pre-season over the last 12 hours or so, with Erik ten Hag naming a strong side.
There were a few youth products sprinkled in, as the Old Trafford side let us all know who they have the most faith in going forward. Kobbie Mainoo, Dan Gore and Alvaro Fernandez are in that group.
However, one man who wasn’t named in the squad is Charlie Savage. The central midfielder also wasn’t involved against Lyon yesterday. Now, it’s all starting to make sense.
According to The Sun, the 20-year-old United starlet is ‘in talks’ over a permanent move away from the club.
League One side Reading are leading the charge to sign the young midfielder in a permanent transfer, though they will face competition from Championship duo, Rotherham and Cardiff City.
Cast your mind back to last summer, when Savage impressed at the heart of United’s midfield alongside Zidane Iqbal. Now, it looks like both are going to be playing their football elsewhere in 2023/24.
Savage looked good for Forest Green Rovers last season while out on loan, though it seems as though Ten Hag didn’t see enough to keep him at the club. Mainoo’s sped up development probably played some part in that, with the Stockport-born midfielder already looking ahead in the pecking order.
You’d imagine United will want some sort of buyback clause included in Savage’s deal if at all possible. If the youngster does impress over the next few years, there’s still a chance we could see him back at the club in the future.
