Bruno Fernandes will be the new Man United captain, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Manchester United Football Club made the decision to strip Harry Maguire of the captain’s armband last weekend, with Erik ten Hag continuing to operate with real ruthlessness.
It always felt like this decision was coming, due to the fact that Maguire was no longer one of the first names on the team sheet. The Englishman had fallen out of favour and it makes no sense to have a captain that’s not playing regularly.
At the time, the options to replace Maguire were limited. Lisandro Martinez, David de Gea (who is no longer here) and Bruno Fernandes were the obvious frontrunners.
Now, Fabrizio Romano has appeared to confirm the identity of the new man who’ll wear the armband after Maguire; Bruno Fernandes.
The Italian hinted that Bruno was expected to be the new armband wearer a couple of days ago, though he’s now been given more assurances that this is the case, hence a follow-up tweet.
Our Portuguese Magnifico feels like the correct call. First and foremost, he plays every single game so we know his availability will be good.
Secondly, he’s the on-field leader when United are playing. He’s not afraid to bark orders at his teammates and give them tactical tips that could swing the balance of any game in United’s favour.
More than anything, he’s the one who’ll pick up the slack when the going gets tough. I remember Bruno going over to the fans after a poor loss under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer one time, gesturing that the players need to cop for some of the stick, not just the manager. At that moment, I knew he was the right man for the job.
Congratulations, Bruno!
