Erik ten Hag has told Harry Maguire he doesn’t want him to leave, despite being stripped of the captaincy.
Over the weekend, Manchester United decided to take the brutal decision to remove the captain’s armband away from Harry Maguire.
The England international has barely been playing for the Red Devils over the last twelve months, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane starting the majority of matches.
It’s fair to say Maguire is fourth choice centre-half at best right now, so keeping the armband with him would have been the wrong decision.
Well, according to talkSPORT, Erik ten Hag has told Maguire that he wants him to stay this summer. That conversation took place privately.
TalkSPORT then add that Maguire remains relaxed about the situation, with the player set to ‘knuckle down’ and work for the team. Presumably, the Three Lions man is intent on keeping his place at the Theatre of Dreams.
That said, I still think there’s a decision to be made. Maguire is at that stage in his career where he’d prefer to be starting matches on a regular basis. That is not happening right now and if he would like to find that elsewhere, then so be it.
I’d imagine that if a decent offer comes in for Maguire, the club would place the ball firmly on his court, with the decision resting on his shoulders as he’s been a good servant to this club.
It’s all about Maguire weighing up what’s best for him and his family. Does he want to stay on the excellent wages he’s currently on and wind down his contract? Or will he benefit from moving to another Premier League club? Or possibly abroad.
Right now, I’d imagine this one could genuinely go either way.
