Man United could yet turn Jonny Evans into a permanent addition at Old Trafford.
Manchester United Football Club surprised the footballing world a few days ago, when they announced that Jonny Evans would join the club on the short-term deal.
The centre-back, 35, left united in 2015, playing for West Brom and Leicester City over that time.
Initially, the contract was to help Evans return to fitness following injury. He’d play well against Lyon in Edinburgh on Wednesday, giving Erik ten hag something to think about.
Now, according to ESPN, United are ‘keeping their options open with Evans. To further add fuel to the fire, the club are ‘refusing to rule out’ the possibility of signing the 35-year-old on a permanent deal.
Evans made his first appearance for the club in eight years during that game against Lyon, though Evans will not travel to New York with the senior squad. Instead, he’ll be with a younger group heading for San Diego, to take on Wrexham.
Sources have told ESPN that Ten Hag has impressed with Evans following recent training sessions, while remaining ‘open-minded’ about whether there is a place for the centre-back in his squad for next season.
Evans is currently looking for a new club, following the expiration of his Leicester City contract.
The verdict
I’d still be surprised if Evans is signed on a longer contract. He’d be fifth choice centre-back at best. I’m not sure the Northern Irishman would be happy playing a bit-part role at this stage in his career.
If he’s fine with that back-up job, then United could do far worse. He’d add some winning experience to this pretty young dressing room. Let’s not forget he’d be the only man at the club with a Premier League winners medal under the belt, too.
