Defender Jonny Evans could end up staying at Man United for the 2023/24 season.
Manchester United’s pre-season has been pretty mixed in terms of results, though the Red Devils have been building up the all-important fitness levels, which is absolutely the main thing.
One of the big surprises this summer was the return of Jonny Evans. The Northern Irishman was involved in training sessions, before it was announced he’d sign a short-term deal at the club, in order to feature in a couple of friendly matches.
Well, Evans is still hanging around and getting involved in training, as he works on getting back to 100% following injury. Now, Erik ten Hag is taking note…
According to the Belfast Telegraph, Evans is ‘close to earning’ a one-year deal to re-sign for United, after leaving the club almost a decade ago.
The article claims that Evans has ‘impressed’ Ten Hag and he ‘could be set’ for a longer stay at Old Trafford than initially thought.
The gaffer is said to be pleased with Evans’ leadership, coupled with his ability to play out from the back. While being worried about defensive cover (or lack of), this could be a smart signing.
Evans, aged 35, could be fourth or fifth choice for the Red Devils, depending on how Harry Maguire’s situation plays out.
Obviously, the veteran isn’t going to be expected to start games every single week, so he’d have to be patient and wait for his limited opportunities.
It depends what Evans wants. If he’s after week-in-week-out starts, he will not get that at United so he may have to look elsewhere. If he’s keen on playing every now and then, for the club he loves, then this could be a positive for all involved.
