Donny van de Beek is no longer needed at Man United, with the club looking to sell the Dutchman.
Manchester United’s squad is beginning to take shape. Along with new signings, some players simply have to leave.
The Red Devils have a lot of average footballers within their current dressing room. The problem is further compounded by the huge wages they’re on.
One player who absolutely fits into that group is Donny van de Beek. He arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations, though he’s never lived up to that initial promise.
Injuries haven’t helped his cause, while many thought he’d improve when Erik ten Hag arrived at the club. That hasn’t happened either.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, the United midfielder has been deemed ‘surplus to requirements’. It’s also stated that the club are prepared to sell for around £25m.
Real Sociedad have been linked with a possible move to sign the ex-Ajax man, with the clubs currently locked in negotiations. They, understandably, have concerns about his fitness issues.
It’s a tricky situation. Van de Beek is obviously a hugely talented footballer. It’s just that his confidence is completely shot, while the chance to rediscover that mindset hasn’t been afforded to him due to the injuries suffered.
The verdict
Right now, I struggle to see a way back for Van de Beek at United. He’s some way down in the pecking order and you’d expect him to drop even further if Sofyan Ambrabat is indeed signed.
A fresh start feels like the right decision for all involved. No doubt Van de Beek will find a club who are willing to take that risk on him, though he’ll probably have to take a wage cut, at least in the short term.
