Man United are ready to let Matej Kovar depart the club permanently.
Manchester United’s goalkeeper room is looking very different this season, with a new number one in place for the first time in a decade.
Erik ten Hag made the decision to move on from David de Gea, with Andre Onana coming in to replace the Spaniard. Tom Heaton is the number two at this stage.
Matej Kovar looked impressive during the first couple of pre-season games, with supporters believing there was an opportunity that he could become third choice. Well, that may not be the case.
According to The Sun, United ‘will let’ the talented 23-year-old leave on a permanent deal this summer. Apparently, both Hull City and Red Star Belgrade are keen on bringing in the shot-stopper.
Sparta Prague, where Kovar spent last season out on loan, were also interested, though the asking price is too high for their liking.
Now, Hull City and Red Star are looking into making ‘serious offers’ to sign the emerging shot-stopper.
Kovar felt like a good option to keep around due to his stylistic fit. He’s good with the ball at feet, while also proving his abilities in the shot-stopping department.
The verdict
With all that said, it was going to be tough for Kovar. He has dreams of being a number one. United were never going to grant him that opportunity after the Onana signing.
It makes sense to try and ship Kovar out now while his value remains high. Aged 23, this feels like the best move for all involved, though it will be sad to see him go.
Hopefully, United get a decent fee for a top talent. That money can then be used on improving the first-team squad.
