Erik ten Hag has confirmed Man United remain in contract talks with Jonny Evans.
Manchester United Football Club are struggling in the transfer market right now. Predominantly when it comes to selling players. The Red Devils haven’t been able to move away from Harry Maguire, who would have generated some decent funds if sold.
The centre-back position feels like an area where Erik ten Hag is looking to further invest, though he needs players gone before that can happen. One man who could be brought in on a contract for the season is Jonny Evans.
The man from Northern Ireland signed a deal with United that helped him through pre-season as he looked to build up fitness following injury. There was always a chance the Reds would keep Evans for a little longer.
Now, in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Spurs game, Ten Hag has confirmed United are ‘in talks’ with Evans, presumably over a longer-term contract. He’s currently on a ‘short’ deal with the Reds until the end of the month.
Check out what Ten Hag had to say on the Jonny Evans situation here:
“We will see. We are in talks and when we have news, we will bring that, as always.” Ten Hag told the media, including ManUtd.com.
“In this moment, [he’s] not [under a long-term contract]. I have to say, it’s a short [deal] for this month, he’s under contract. But we are talking.”
I said it at the time. I’ll say it again now. I’d be more than fine with Evans signing a one-year deal, purely for depth purposes. I’d trust him more than I’d trust Maguire, so he’d be fourth or fifth choice centre-back at worst.
On what we’d have to assume would be a relatively cheap contract, this makes all the sense in the world. I know it’s not the flashy, big-money signing that fans tend to want, but it does fill a need within that dressing room.
We’d all prefer to see someone like Benjamin Pavard, but unless Maguire is sold, then the club will have to settle for someone like Evans. To add some extra experience is never a bad thing, while you know Evans will give you a solid 6/10 week-in-week-out.
