Man United are looking at a move to bring in Odysseas Vlachodimos as their new back-up goalkeeper.
Manchester United’s summer transfer window started off nicely, with swift moves made to sign Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund.
However, Erik ten Hag’s summer has drastically slowed down since – and I’m not sure it’s down to the manager. The Dutchman has likely been told he has to sell before he can buy – at least when it comes to big-money signings anyway.
One area of the squad that still addressing is the goalkeeper position. Onana is here, though the back-up jersey is up for grabs. Dean Henderson’s future still remains up in the air. In the case that he leaves, someone will have to be signed in order to challenge Tom Heaton.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United have eyes on Odysseas Vlachodimos as their new number two goalie. He states United are ‘now exploring’ a move to sign the 29-year-old player, who is ‘top’ of the Reds’ list as a new back-up shot-stopper.
The man from Greece would come in with decent pedigree, playing regular football for Benfica over in Portugal since the 2018/19 season.
In terms of a back-up, you’d see Vlachodimos as someone who is overqualified for the role, though that’s a good thing. The Greek would bring some more experience into that dressing room.
My one concern that in terms of stylistic fit, I cannot help but think there are better options out there. Vlachodimos isn’t really built in the same way that Onana is, while the pair have different strengths and weaknesses.
However, the likelihood is that Vlachodimos would only play a handful of games a season anyway. That said, I wouldn’t want to overpay for him.
