Man United are looking at a move to sign Marco Verratti this summer.
Manchester United’s first couple of games have thrown up more questions than answers. No doubt Erik ten Hag is feeling the early pressure right now.
Perhaps the biggest problem is midfield. Suddenly, United look pretty hopeless in that area and it’s hard to work out why. Casemiro looks exposed, while Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes are yet to find that on-field connection that’s absolutely necessary.
It’s no surprise then, to see United linked with a deal to acquire Italy midfielder, Marco Verratti.
It’s L’Équipe with the claim, thanks to GFNF for the translation. They state that United are showing an interest in signing the 30-year-old this summer, who is free to leave his current club, PSG.
Bayern Munich are also keen on Verratti, with plenty of departures expected from PSG between now and the end of the window. The Italy international has been told he’s surplus to requirements.
As things stand, Verratti has an agreement in place with Al Ahli, though they’re yet to reach a deal with PSG over the transfer. Now, European interest in the midfielder has come to light. United ‘cannot be ruled out’ of the transfer, which would set the club back around £51m (€60m).
The verdict
It’s all well and good liking Verratti as a player. I’m sure United do. I’m sure they see him as someone who can fix the problem. However, it’s not just about that this summer.
FFP constraints are a real thing for United, while money is also tight. United are now in a situation where they have to sell players before they can buy. I’m not sure they have £50m worth of assets that other clubs want to invest in. That’s just the harsh reality.
I’d give this deal a very slim chance at happening, in all honesty.
