Mason Greenwood is all set to leave Man United by mutual agreement.
Manchester United Football Club have had their fair share of off-field issues to deal with of late. The Mason Greenwood situation sits atop that list, particularly over the last couple of weeks.
I don’t doubt that behind the scenes, people were split on the outcome. We’ll never know the full details of what went on behind closed doors, but United will have done their own investigation and come to their conclusion.
I still believe the club were planning a different outcome about a week ago, though fan power came through. Now, the club have confirmed that Greenwood will no longer play for United. He will leave the club by mutual consent.
United reiterated that they’ll help Greenwood find that next destination, wherever that may be. Perhaps they see it as their duty of care to help a young man who came through the academy.
In his own statement, Greenwood seemed adamant in his belief that he didn’t do the things that surfaced on social media. Make your own judgement on that one.
The OTF verdict
We have not spoken on this situation for obvious reasons. We do not want to get ourselves into trouble on either side of this tricky situation.
Now that it has been confirmed Greenwood will leave, we can speak a little more freely. I honestly believe United had no other option here. The fans made their voices heard and the majority wanted him gone.
What’s done is done. It’s sad to see that Greenwood has tossed away an opportunity, though he’s admitted he has done wrong in his relationship, hence, it led to this very public situation playing out.
Aged just 21, there’s still plenty of time left for Greenwood to turn things around in his career. Assuming someone is willing to take that risk.
