Man United have put goalkeeper Altay Bayindir through medical tests, ahead of a possible move.
Manchester United have installed Andre Onana as their new number one, in a deal that is going well so far. However, there’s much going on behind the scenes in regard to the back-up option.
A Tom Heaton injury led to Dean Henderson staying at the club. The latter is still being eyed by many sides about a potential move away.
In the event that happens, the Red Devils will have to bring in someone new. Among the names linked is Altay Bayindir, who currently plies his trade for Fenerbahce.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has provided an update on Bayindir, claiming United are ‘conducting medical tests’ on the 25-year-old.
United have been pursing Bayindir for ‘some time’, but want to gain clarity on the severity of a back problem, before deciding whether to sign the shot-stopper or not.
He is undergoing provisional checks in Greece, with United having the opportunity to make the signing for around £4.2m (€5m). Any arrival would be contingent on Henderson leaving.
The verdict
Any back-up goalkeeper has to fit the stylistic profile United are after. That should be the first box that’s ticked. Bayindir can play out from the back, so this move would make some sense in that regard.
Again, though, I have my doubts about whether the transfer will happen. United have been poor in the selling market for many years. Henderson is the latest who is suffering from his own massive wages. His injury only further confuses the situation.
I’d like to think that eventually, a Henderson sale will happen, though I’m not fully convinced it will.
