Rhys Bennett is edging closer to making a comeback for Man United following injury.
Manchester United’s injury list has been lengthy to start the season. The Red Devils are now working without about ten first-teamers. Some of them regulars, others, just on the verge of a breakthrough.
One young man who could have found himself forced into senior action due to injuries suffered by others was Rhys Bennett. This was supposed to be his summer to showcase his immense abilities.
Sadly, his pre-season with the senior team was cut short by an early injury. The centre-back, who captained the FA Youth Cup-winning squad alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, only managed one game against Leeds on July 12th before being struck down.
After signing a new contract over the summer, United’s belief in Bennett as a talent is clear. Now, it’s about getting him out there on the field.
Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, the 19-year-old United starlet is ‘close’ to a return to full training following his pre-season injury.
This is obviously massive news for the Denton-born-defender, who could possibly see a first-team pathway in his short-term future, due to injuries in that area of the pitch.
Bennett was outstanding in that FA Youth Cup final against Nottingham Forest, looking like a true professional at such a tender age. He defended with a maturity beyond his years and it was an absolute pleasure watching him play with so much heart and passion.
The verdict
Now that he’s closing in on a return to action, it’s about continuing to develop and grow at his own pace and speed. Perhaps he has missed his opportunity for this season, but I don’t doubt we’ll see him heavily involved during next summer’s pre-season tour.
