Man United are set to hold talks with Hannibal Mejbri about a new long-term contract at Old Trafford.
Manchester United Football Club have been forced to move in different directions since the start of the season, largely due to injury. The Red Devils have been struck down by many treatment table issues.
However, it has presented an opportunity for fresh players to prove their worth. Facundo Pellistri looked decent enough against Bayern Munich, while over the weekend, it was Hannibal’s time to shine.
The young man started in midfield, showcasing his energy, on-ball quality, tenacity and sheer desire to win. It was a breath of fresh air watching him wear that shirt with pride and play with real purpose.
It’s no surprise then to hear that United ‘plan to hold discussions’ with the talented 20-year-old about a new long-term contract. His current deal expires next summer, though the Reds are expected to trigger a one-year option, which will mean he’d be tied down until at least 2025. The story comes from the Manchester Evening News.
United do not regard Hannibal’s future as an urgent issue due to the maximum expiry date of his deal, though the club plan to progress with renewal discussions in the near future.
Hannibal has only just been promoted into the first-team fold, though largely through injuries suffered by others. You’d expect that when the squad is fully fit, the Tunisia international will take a back seat once again. However, if he continues to play well, Ten Hag has a real decision to make.
The verdict
A new deal, probably slightly increasing his weekly wage, gives United more time to make their minds up about Hannibal. Make no mistake about it, though, the player will want some first-team guarantees as he’s approaching the stage in his career where regular minutes are a must.
