Erik ten Hag has backed his goalkeeper, Andre Onana, after his struggles in the game against Galatasaray on Tuesday.
Manchester united now face an uphill battle in the Champions League. The Red Devils have lost their two opening matches. One somewhat expected, the other, not so much.
Galatasaray, to their credit, took their chances superbly when presented with them last night. Although United always felt like the side on the front foot, the Turkish side shone through and picked up what ended up being a deserved victory.
Much of the blame was placed at Andre Onana’s door. Two of the three goals, you’d certainly expect him to do better, while his pass which led to the Galatasaray penalty was nothing short of shocking.
Questions are now being raised, particularly after big money was spent to bring in the man from Cameroon. However, Erik ten Hag has lept to the defence of his shot-stopper, claiming that he will bounce back after what was a pretty dreadful display.
Check out what Erik ten Hag had to say in full on Andre Onana:
“We are happy with our goalkeeping group, definitely with Andre,” Ten Hag said, per Sky Sports. “He was in one semi-final of the Champions League, last year he was in the final of the Champions League, he has the capablilties to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“He has shown that and he will do. We already have seen in games his great capabilites, also his personality after he made mistakes. He will bounce back and I am sure he will in the coming games as well.”
We’ve seen Onana’s qualities on full display in the Champions League for Inter Milan. You just get the feeling that he’s yet to feel completely comfortable here in Manchester. It does not help when you’ve got a pretty dodgy defence ahead of you, mind.
I see this as a club problem rather than an Onana problem. He has all the tools required to play at the highest level. Yes, he hasn’t put in his best performances recently but we’ve seen his capabilities in the past. Every player goes through a poor spell.
Hopefully, he can come out of the other end soon, as if these clangers keep happening, then serious questions will start to be asked about whether he is good enough to play for Manchester United.
