Paul Scholes is worried about Raphael Varane at Man United…
Manchester United lost again last night, with the Red Devils now losing their opening two matches in the Champions League this season. It’s obviously a brutal situation for Erik ten Hag and his players.
So far this term, it has been the attack has looked toothless. Typically, it was role reversal yesterday evening. The forwards looked bang on the money, namely, Rasmus Hojlund. Defensively though, the Old Trafford side were an absolute mess.
Sofyan Amrabat was decent enough, but Diogo Dalot has to shoulder some blame for his failure to deal with Zaha for the first goal. Then, both Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane struggled, particularly when United were down to ten men.
After the game, ex-United player Paul Scholes had admitted his ‘worry’ about the Reds first-teamer Varane. He believes the World Cup winner is looking a ‘little sluggish’ at this stage in his career. It’s hard to disagree.

I love Rapha. United are a better team with him in it. However, he doesn’t look anywhere near as good when he’s not alongside Lisandro Martinez. Perhaps the pair just complement each other well, while United do not have a duo that can live up to their high levels when either one of them is absent.
The other obvious issue with Varane is his fitness. We’ve seen it time and time again, he will pick up a few injuries every season and you just have to live with it. Sadly, that’s just the nature of the situation at this stage in his career.
