Man United January target, Kaoru Mitoma, is close to signing a new contract at Brighton.
Just yesterday, we covered a claim from Spain which stated that Manchester United (and Manchester City) were set to battle it out for the January signature of Kaoru Mitoma.
At the time, we were sceptical about our chances at landing the in-form winger for Japan for a variety of reasons.
Well, less than 24 hours later and the dream looks dead in the water. It’s talkSPORT who deal the transfer blow, confirming that the 26-year-old winger is set to sign a new contract at Brighton, to ‘ward’ off interested parties.
Apparently, Mitoma’s new deal will see him tied down until 2028, meaning that if the man from Japan is sold, he’ll now cost a huge transfer fee due to the fact that Brighton would no longer be under any pressure to sell.
Mitoma has had an incredible year of football which has led to all the Premier League elite clubs showing an interest in the left-sided player.
My stance hasn’t changed. I’m not sure this would be the best use of the budget for United, particularly as Mitoma may not displace Marcus Rashford from the starting line-up.
I’d much prefer the club to spend big on another centre-back or right-winger, though again, I don’t think that would happen in January due to a lack of available funds.
Even if United could generate the funds, I’m not sure they’d be able to convince Mitoma to pick Old Trafford over the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal at this point in time. It just highlights what a sad situation Erik ten Hag’s side are in right now…
