Man United are looking at Joao Neves as a possible transfer option.
Manchester United’s squad continues to be overhauled by Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager has made some good signings so far, though it’s pretty clear further work is needed.
The problem is the fact that the club continues to overpay in terms of weekly wages, to fringe players who do not necessarily deserve them. It makes those players hard to sell.
In the event that the club can move on from some of those guys, players will be brought in to replace them. Hence, United are scouring the globe for the next possible Old Trafford heroes.
According to The Sun, United have a 19-year-old central midfielder on their transfer ‘radar’. That man is SL Benfica’s Joao Neves.
According to the report, Ten Hag has sent his scouts to watch the player, with the Dutchman ramping up his recruitment options in Portugal, with Goncalo Inacio also being monitored.
Neves has been one of Benfica’s stand-out performers so far this season, with United watching him take on Estoril last week.
United have always had success when signing players from Portugal. It seems like a league that translate well to the English game. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Nani have all flourished for United after directly leaving their home country.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Neves is going to be the best thing since sliced bread, but I do feel confident about his chances at succeeding in England should the move happen.
You’d imagine this will be a deal for next summer rather than January, due to the fact that funds are still likely limited.
