Man United have eyes on Atalanta centre-back, Giorgio Scalvini.
Manchester United’s defence has been absolutely ruined by injury so far this term. Lisandro Martinez came into the campaign with problems, while Raphael Varane will always pick up those little, niggling injuries. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have longer-term issues, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also out.
It makes sense then, to see Erik ten Hag eyeing a move to bring in some new defenders. The latest name to be thrown into the mix is Giorgio Scalvini.
It’s TuttoMercatoWeb with the claim, with thanks to Sport Witness for the translation. According to their claim, United are in the mix to sign Scalvini.
Napoli apparently made their move to sign Scalvini last summer in a deal worth around £33m, though obviously no transfer happened.
Now, United hold a ‘strong interest’ in signing the young centre-back, though they’ll continue to face stiff competition for the signature, with Juventus and Inter Milan also a fan of Scalvini’s.
United absolutely have to get younger at the centre-half position. That goes without saying. Whether Scalvini is the answer remains to be seen. However, the Reds have recently signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta. he’s young and settling in nicely. Perhaps the club are hoping that lightning can strike twice.
It’s always tough to gauge exactly how younger players will develop, particularly when moving to a new country. The fact that several of Italy’s top teams are keen on bringing in Scalvini does fill me with some confidence, mind.
The other issue is transfer fee. Scalvini is not going to come cheaply. The price was £40m+ last summer. You’d imagine with another excellent season that fee is only going to continue to rise.
