Anthony Martial isn’t content with his backup role at Man United.
Manchester United made some big-money moves over the summer, as Erik ten Hag looks to continue the squad overhaul. Among the major signings made was Rasmus Hojlund, in a deal worth in excess of £70million.
The Dane started the campaign out injured, though has since come to the fore and proven that he does have what it takes to make it at the highest level, despite being so young.
As a result, it has meant that Anthony Martial has seen his minutes drastically reduce. The Frenchman has also been dealing with his own injury woes of late, hence, we’ve seldom seen him out on the field.
Now, Football Insider have provided an update on Martial’s future – and he’s not happy at present…
According to the report, the 27-year-old United star is not content with a backup role at the club, with Martial keen to become the ‘main man’ at this stage of his career, which has somewhat ‘stagnated’ of late.
There was interest in Martial over the summer, though no transfer came to fruition. The ex-AS Monaco man is out of contract in 2024, though the club hold the option to trigger a one-year extension clause in his contract. Something which they’d likely do in order to protect Martial’s transfer value.
Honestly, at this point, United should just get what they can for Martial while he’s still young enough to fetch in at least a semi-decent transfer fee. I don’t see any way back into the first-team fold for him, assuming Hojlund can now stay fit for prolonged periods of time.
It would mean United would have to dip their toes into the water for another striker, though I’d genuinely prefer to see Joe Hugill given a go in that back-up role instead. He is a natural-born finisher.
