Man United are set to trigger the one-year contract extensions in the contract of a pair of Reds defenders.
Manchester United Football Club are a mess at the moment, particularly defensively. The Red Devils have been shipping goals for fun this term, which is in complete contrast to last season where they were watertight back there.
Erik ten Hag is no doubt frustrated, while injuries are also playing their part on that front. As things stand, the whole first choice back four is absent.
As a result, it makes sense to see United linked with moves to bring in new defenders. However, Ten Hag is also keen to keep ahold of some of the current crop.
It’s the Manchester Evening News with the claim, who state that the Red Devils are set to trigger the one year contract extension options on two players’ contracts; both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof will see their deals extended by one year, over the next few months.
The Red Devils are keen to tie down these guys to another year in order to protect their transfer value. It also gives the club time to work on longer term contracts if that’s the road they want to take.
Hannibal is another whose year-long contract extension is also set to be triggered.
The general thought is that Wan-Bissaka will be handed a new longer-term contract, with talks taking place before his most recent injury.
Lindelof’s situation is more interesting. He’s a little older than Wan-Bissaka, so the length of the contract will likely be lower than the right-back’s.
It’s worse news for Anthony Martial, mind, with the club still unsure on what to do with the Frenchman. He’s struggling for minutes as things stand. That will not change for as long as Rasmus Hojlund remains fit. The Frenchman could look to leave the club in the meantime.
This is just another case of united protecting their assets. It makes complete sense for the Reds to do exactly that, particularly with players who are regular starters when fully fit and available.
